Can Scotland at last break the All Blacks hoodoo?
Autumn Nations Series: Scottish team versus All Blacks
Venue: Scottish Gas Murrayfield, Edinburgh Date: this weekend Time: 15:10 GMT
Things were simpler then. The fourth meeting of the Scottish and New Zealand teams. A heaving Murrayfield, a scoreless tie, winter of 1964. Euphoria at full-time. Fans flooding the field to symbolize the historic accomplishment by Scotland.
After defeating Ireland, Wales and England, the All Blacks had finally been halted in a international match.
A contemporary reporter almost blew a gasket. "A game that no-one who saw it will ever forget," he announced excitedly and somewhat optimistically. "A match in which Scotland saved the honour of Britain."
Leaving the stadium that evening, home supporters would have had optimism about what was to come. Multiple efforts to defeat the All Blacks and zero victories, but clear signs that success might be imminent.
Three years later, New Zealand beat the Scots. Half a decade later, they beat them again. Three years further on, identical outcome. Another five-year gap and, indeed, you know the rest.
Modern Encounters
Two decades of matches later. Twenty All Black wins. From Christchurch to Dunedin, from the Southern to Northern Hemisphere - locations have varied but not the outcomes.
In his time in the job, Gregor Townsend has ended losing runs in Paris, Cardiff and Twickenham, but this is another level. This is 32 games across 120 years. One of sport's greatest hoodoos.
Team News
Over the past seasons the comprehensive defeats have reduced to closer margins in 2014, 2017 and 2022, but New Zealand consistently prevail.
Through their brilliance, physical dominance, game management, they secure victory.
As match day approaches where positive expectations that supporters maintained for Scottish success is likely diminishing. Hope is colliding with history.
Key Absences
Thursday brought news that Fagerson was unavailable. To Scottish ambitions it was a significant setback.
The prop has been absent since spring, but he's exceptional and if available then the long gap without a game would not have been a massive concern.
During modern rugby early in matches, his endurance stands out. Unmatched playing time in the Six Nations.
Squad Depth
Another absence is Jones but Rory Hutchinson is flying form with his club. Fagerson's replacement presents concerns. While Rae is capable, his international experience consists of limited game time.
Once Rae's shift ends, his replacement takes over. While competent, there's little to suggest that he's All Black-beating class.
Strategic Decisions
The coach has made unexpected selections, partly expected, some puzzling. Kyle Steyn's game-management intelligence replaces Duhan van der Merwe's more one-dimensional power.
The flanker selection is unconventional, Rory Darge starting on the bench. There's no Andy Onyeama-Christie in the 23.
Past Encounters
Facing the Irish, the All Blacks secured the opening match of what they hope will be a Grand Slam tour. They took an age to get going, even when playing against 14 men, but their final surge secured victory.
That and Ireland's defensive shape, their attack, set-piece issues.
Statistical Analysis
Despite late-game surges, the last 20 minutes is not where New Zealand typically dominates. Across international matches recently, they've accumulated scores in the first half and fewer after halftime.
Strong opening performances, excellent second quarters, moderate third quarters and solid finishes. They start aggressively.
Required Performance
Against Scotland in 2022, New Zealand scored early in the opening seven minutes. Establishing early dominance, the game looked done. Scotland recovered majestically to hit them with 23 unanswered points.
The lesson here is that, metaphorically, Scotland must put the boot on the throat from kickoff - and keep it there.
Over the last decade, successful opponents have needed to score in the upper twenties. Scotland have got into the 20s only occasionally against the All Blacks.
Conclusion
Everything has to go right for Townsend's team. Absolutely everything. If they start butchering chances early on then forget it. Disciplinary issues? A high penalty count? A battered scrum? It's over.
With perfect execution? Explosive start. A raucous crowd. Electric atmosphere. Ruthlessness. Russell being Russell. Darcy Graham's brilliance.
Fantasy rugby, maybe. We haven't seen an 80 minutes from Scotland that would be sufficient against New Zealand. If it's in there, it's about time it came out; 120 years is enough of a wait.
